Bude is an ideal location for all types of paddlesport. We use the sea, the surf, our canal and local rivers to run a wide variety of courses.
Sea Kayaking is all about the journey and the exploration of the coastline. Our Cornish coast can be a dramatic and extreme environment with vertical cliffs plunging straight into the Atlantic ocean. It can also provide much more sheltered areas with the various small harbours and estuaries that punctuate the coast. Sea Kayaking is best enjoyed after having acquired some basic skills first and we'd always recommend that first time paddlers have one or two sessions with us on the Bude canal before taking to the sea.
We run our Sea Kayaking from various locations starting right here in Bude with the harbour and estuary as an ideal introduction to this activity. Boscastle harbour and Port Quin provide access to the wilder stretches of our Cornish coast with Daymer Bay, on the Camel estuary, and the Fowey estuary providing more sheltered environments.
We use a fleet of straight running, robust plastic sea kayaks that glide through calm and choppy waters making progress as easy as possible, having said that its important to bare in mind that Sea Kayaking can be tiring and as such is not suitable for very young children or completely inexperienced paddlers. We run half day and day trips as well as BCU 3 star sea training and assessment courses.

Ideal for half day introductions to this activity
A good access point for various day trips up and down the Camel estuary and across to Padstow
A safe and sheltered estuary ideal for day trips when the north coast is too wild.
Great access points for exploring the wildest sections of the North Cornish Coast.
All trips can be themed around the paddlers needs be it exploration, skill development or the training and assessment for the BCU 3 Star Sea Kayaking award.
If you've never kayaked before we'd recommend you start with a session or two on the Bude canal where we can provide you with a good foundation of skills. This will allow you to then enjoy the more advanced environments in a safe way.
We can accommodate a wide range of ages across the many kayaking and canoeing activities but we'd recommend the following minimum ages based on the strength and endurance required for each activity :
Canal based kayaking minimum age 8.
Sea Kayaking minimum age 12.
Sea Kayaking is a physically demanding sport and in some conditions minimum aged paddlers will struggle.
The Bude harbour and estuary session is an ideal introduction to this sport as the session starts with a paddle down the Bude canal where each paddlers ability can be assessed safely before setting out into the sea. Our team of experienced kayak coaches can then make important safety and quality decisions about whether the session should or should not go into the sea and what activities would be suitable for the paddlers in their charge.
Please be honest with our team about your capabilities when making a booking and during an activity as this will effect both the safety and quality of the session.
We provide all the equipment and outer clothing for your sea kayaking activity, all you need to bring along is a change of clothing (see suggestions below) and sufficient food and drink if taking part in a full day trip. We will provide water proof cags, spray decks, dry bags and buoyancy aids as well as the boats and paddles.
Clothing to wear for this activity :
Summer conditions - tracksuit bottoms or shorts, T-shirt and an old pair of trainers or wetsuit boots. Bring an extra warm layer to store in the kayak if on a day trip.
Winter conditions - tracksuit bottoms, waterproof over trousers, T-shirt, Fleece, wooly hat and an old pair of trainers or wetsuit boots plus spare extra layers if on a day trip.
Alternatives - A full wetsuit can be used for sea kayaking but in warm conditions it can prove to be too hot and restrictive and may cause rubbing.
For more advanced courses paddlers often bring their own equipment and clothing. We do have a fleet of specialist sea kayaks which are available to be used on all courses as required.
